The Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation with Secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. CEHRD’s Mission is to “forge a common link with the rural Niger Delta communities primarily, through research, participatory training, campaigns and advocacy on the problems confronting them. Equipping them with the basic knowledge of their situation and encouraging them to non-violently address the issues themselves”. The organization was formed as a response to the increasing problems of environmental degradation, underdevelopment, community health and human rights plaguing the Niger Delta region. Since her formation in 1999, CEHRD has been working in partnership with several local, national and international organizations to promote accountability and transparency in governance, enlighten local communities on environmental conservation, human rights issues, human security in conflict and emergencies, rural health and education. Over the years, CEHRD has trained the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and beneficiaries of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme, of the Ex-Militants in the Niger Delta Region. Presently, CEHRD is keen in ensuring that private security firms follow the voluntary principles and apply global human right standards.
